Tinypng

tinypng is a utility that will shrink the file size of your png and jpg files.

From their website:

How does it work?
Excellent question! When you upload a PNG (Portable Network Graphics) file, similar colors in your image are combined. This technique is called “quantization”. By reducing the number of colors, 24-bit PNG files can be converted to much smaller 8-bit indexed color images. All unnecessary metadata is stripped too. The result: better PNG files with 100% support for transparency. Have your cake and eat it too!

I tried it with a few png files I had and it does what it says it will do. I didn't notice too much difference in the images and especially in clip art type graphics no difference.

Give it a try.

Try Spruce for Social Media Pictures

Spruce is a great way to add text to a photograph to use in presentations or for your Twitter feed. Visit http://www.tryspruce.com/ to start the process. There is a how it works button, but it really is pretty intuitive.

1. Insert your Text.
2. Pick your Font from the pull down menu
3. Search for a background photo or upload your own photo
4. Download your image or share it through Facebook or Twitter

Now you should have an attractive looking graphic for your presentation or social media needs. Give it a try!

What do these pictures have in common?

Take a look at this picture from Josh Wilson.

What do all of these pictures have in common? (exclude the middle picture as it is merely decorative)

If you know answer in the comments section.

They are all things over your head.

These types of brain teasers are great for kids as long as they are challenging but not overly hard for their grade level. Think about all of the great group discussion that could happen with a picture riddle like this.

Student could use picture editors to create an image like this. A downloaded program like Paint.net would work or use a free an online editor like Pixlr  or  SumoPaint.

They could also use PowerPoint to create What (or Who) am I riddles. Tammy Worcester Tang has a great tutorial on how to do this process.

Use some graphics in your class and see if you can get some good discussion going.
